Live: In Late Winter

I know spring is coming because the light is changing, the low winter sun is giving way to brighter beams. I know spring is coming because the scent of hyacinth welcomes you as you enter the grocery stores. I know spring is coming because the snow is getting soft in a way that means the earth will soon be warmer. I know spring is coming because the river is flowing a little quicker than it was only days ago. I know spring is coming because it takes twenty minutes to make it through the line at the car wash. I know spring is coming because I want to throw open my windows and fill my house with fresh air.

But mostly I know spring is coming because I'm finally ready to let go of winter. I'm ready to pack away the snow and cold for another day, a day a long ways off one that follows new growth and hot sun, a day that comes only after thunderstorms and new school supplies, a day when finally I'll step outside and sniff the wind and think to myself: I know winter is coming I can smell it in the air!

Live: Summer 2014

I think I might be taking this slow blogging thing a little too far,a month and a half might be a little long. But I've been summering and it has been wonderful. So I thought I'd share my Summer 2014 Must List. I know the summer is already half over, but I think it is still worth putting pen to paper or type to screen and getting a little list going.

My first must do this summer is take advantage of all the great things happening in my own back yard this time of year. I've already made it to German Park and the Botanical Gardens and have my mind set on returning to both later in the summer. I also have plans to stroll around The Ann Arbor Art Fair and the Ypsilanti Heritage Festival, maybe catch a free concert, defiantly tour historic homes and I'm pretty sure my nephew is going to need a trip to the petting zoo. Basically find the fun right here.

For whatever reason I haven't being reading much these days. So I'm setting a five book goal for this summer. I'm already 1/2 way through two books so I think this is going to be totally manageable and I hope that it will get me back into the reading groove.

This one is self explanatory. And just a plea to get you to invite me out to your lake house!

Like reading I haven't been flexing my creative muscles as much. So I'm setting a goal here too, one crochet project, one sewing project, one painting project, one diy furniture revamp and one house project!

I've already taken a trip to the zoo and I spent a day traipsing around Boston with my sister in-law Kelsey. It was a great inspiration to fill the rest of the summer with Day Trips to a few Cute Towns and the Great Lakes.

Finally I'm really working on being more intentional in everything I do and this summer is a great time to work on it. To that end, I've been reading a wonderful book, Pursue The Intentional Life, with my sisters and have been really enjoying listening to The Lively Show podcast. I highly recommend both.

There you have it, just a few of they ways that I plan on getting the most out of my summer! And now it is fun ahoy!

Live: Lost

Sunday night, as I was driving home from my mom and dad's house, I was thinking about how pleased I was with my weekend. I didn't get everything on my to do list done, but I got close. I mostly finished my of my Christmas shopping, I had set up the tree and done a little more decorating, I had spent hours helping my mom sew costumes, I'd had a few great meals with family, I enjoyed sleeping in a couple days and not changing out of my pjs until noon. I was running through a little get your week started right to do list in my mind, you know before I go to bed I'll do the dishes, wipe down the bathroom, figure out what to have to lunch tomorrow and maybe do a load of laundry. Over all I was pretty up. But then . . .

I arrived home to find; an ajar back door, scattered belongings, dumped drawers, open jewelry boxes, a smashed window and missing belongings. My heart was racing, my cheeks were flushed, it felt like a violation and I was just mad. But here's the thing, I realized pretty quickly that I wasn't really mad about the over turned drawers, the stolen gems or even the broken window. Sure it would have been nice to pass down the pearls I was given for my 21st birthday to a younger family member and yes it isn't fun to be forced into buying a new computer a few months before you are ready and I'm not really crazy about spending my home repair budget on a window when I really wanted to have water run for an ice maker. All of that is just stuff, stuff I liked, but not stuff that I need. As I was cleaning up broken glass I thought about this sermon I heard a few weeks ago. The pastor challenged us to think about the question; "if I lost this (whatever this may be) would I be okay?". Here I was faced with on a very small scale that illustration come to life. I lost things, just things and I was absolutely, completely okay.

So why was I mad? I was mad, actually mad isn't even the right word, I was disappointed. I was disappointed because I knew that someone was out there (with a backpack full of my stuff) that didn't get it. The couple hundred dollars they would get from pawning the things from my house wasn't going to make life any better. Maybe it would make things a little more okay for a short while, but not for long and surely spending your life taking what doesn't belong to you must make you so much more less okay than having the things makes like more okay. And that just makes me sad. Sad that there are people who feel like they need to do things like break into the homes of others and sad that there are times when I think that all the stuff is important and that the having of the stuff is what makes me okay.

Finally, I'm going to leave you with maybe the most surprising turn of event in this whole ordeal. I've been feeling really inspired to let go of some of the stuff I've just been hanging on to. I think it is time to pass along unworn necklaces and say good bye to ever used purses, because I really just don't need that stuff.

P.S. To lighten the mood; Enjoy this great cover from Tuesday's episode of The Voice.

P.P.S. I loved this article about why people invite you to come to church. And would you like to come to church with me?

P.P.P.S. Buzzinga, what a way to get back into blogging. I promise I have more fun posts coming very soon!

Live: Take Me Out To The Ball Game!

I'm trying to squeeze every last drop out of summer.

Even though this morning I could feel fall, I'm still soaking up the last little bits of summer. Back in mid August, my dear friend Lynn came into town and suggested that a bunch of us head down to a Tiger's game. And it was just a totally great night. Fun friends, yummy food, the seventh inning stretch and some really good baseball.

I think this picture of Emmy sums it all up: It was an awesome day! I mean can't you just hear her yelling "This is AWESOME!"?

Live: German Park

Three times a summer The German Park Recreation Club hosts picnics on their lovely 20 acre property north of Ann Arbor. I went out to the July picnic with some friends (and family) and we had such a good time, I felt I would be remiss to not tell you all about it and remind you that you can still enjoy the last picnic of the season this Saturday.

What to do at German Park:

  • Bring Friends - This is one of those places where it really is the more the merrier.
  • Watch the German Dancing - My favorite part of the evening every time.
  • Drink Beer - Yummy German beer, bought by the bucket or Rootbeer for the kiddies
  • Eat German Food - Bratwurst, Saurkraut, Spaetzle and Pretzels.
  • Bring Cash - For the Brats and the Beer!
  • Be Prepared - For rain, bugs or cool weather.
  • Dance A Polka - With your dad or anyone else.
  • Bring Cards - Or a game to play.
  • Have Fun - Lots and lots of fun!

Live: What To Do On Your Long Commute

A few months ago I started a new job and along with it I started a new, much longer, commute (all the way to Detroit, but that is another story). At first I was really down on the drive, it takes me any where from 40 to 70 minutes to get there and 50 to 70 minutes to get home, but then I decided to try and make the time useful in any way I could and really try and enjoy it. So I came up with a few ways to fill my time and I thought today I'd share a few of those ways with you.
  • Listen to books on CD. I think I've have listened to five or six in the last month alone (expect recommendations later this summer). I find for me and my drive a book with about 10 disks works best.
  • Call your Grandma. My Grandma loves to talk on the phone, but it can be hard to find the time to chat for 30 or 40 minutes. If I call her right after I hop on the expressway it gives me the prefect time to talk to her.
  • Dig out a some old music and  jam. I pulled out a few mixed cds I made while in college, they are the perfect pick me up at the end of a long day.
  • Eat Breakfast or Dinner. That most likely means popcorn and apple slices. And please don't tell my dad I eat in the car, he always hated when we would do that.
  • Pray. Why not open up your soul and lay your burdens on the Lord while you drive? Or simply praise Him for sunshine and clear skies!
Do you have any tricks for beating the commuter daze?

Live: Craft Cabin

Two weekends ago a group of my girlfriends (cousins/sisters/childhood friends) gathered together for our second Craft Cabin adventure. The rules of Craft Cabin are simple, someone has to turn 30 (this time it was me!), there must be a lake, you have to watch a movie (or three), you must eat lots of snacks, there has to be yarn, you must do a lot of laughing and babies are encouraged to come. This year  my cousin Hannah's in-laws let us use their lake house and we were almost out numbered by babies, I think it is safe to say that a great time was had by all.

P.S. we basically took over the hashtag #craftcabin on instagram.
