Listen: Get Up, Get Down, Get Moving

I find March to be one of the hardest to get through. It is that wishy washy time when winter has started to end and spring has begun, but neither are fully there. With that in mind I thought that the perfect play list for March would be one that makes you want to get up and dance. So here are a few of my favorite foot tapping, hand clapping, booty shaking jams. What are your favorite tunes to groove to?

P.S. You can find the top photo on etsy at CassiaBeck

P.P.S. Honorable mention for Meg & Dia's Unsinkable Ships, I couldn't find it on Grooveshark, but it makes me wanna dance and clap my hands whenever I listen to it.

P.P.P.S. The play list is growing, you can get even more music to dance the night away to here

Listen: All 90s All The Time

Lately I've been playing this little game with myself. I've been playing it over Twitter, but I know it has been mostly to amuse myself. I call it #myfakeradioshow with the tag line #all90sallthetime, it is completely silly and absolutely fun! Fear not if you don't follow me on twitter (@libbysomething) I made a play list just for you, but be warned you may find yourself listening to it a million times (okay maybe that is just me).

Listen: From Mom & Dad's Record Collection

Sunday night I was over at my parents house, where my younger sister was having friends spend the night. Somehow one of the girls started talking to my dad about music, which lead to the opening of the cupboards in my parents library that hold the records that my dad has saved over the last fifty years or so. Long after the girls had made their way down to the basement to play around in my sisters new "dance studio" my dad and I were left pulling out favorite and playing great songs for one another. It was wonderful, I grew up in a music listening family, but lately I just don't find myself putting tunes on all the often. I tend to turn on NPR when I listen to the radio and my iphone has more hours of audiobooks than music on it. So, it was really great to listen to some of the music I have loved for most of my life. I even made you a little play list, it has some of my dad's Motown and a little of my mom's 70s folk, classic country that my mom grew up listening to and my dad found a love for as an adult and Edgar Winter rock 'n roll (the ultimate soundtrack of the Fink kids young lives). I hope you enjoy it, now if you'll excuse me I'm off to listen to more Stevie Wonder, Dolly Parton, Dusty Springfield and The Dave Clark Five.

Listen: Karmin

I was introduced to Karmin by my little sister Phoebs, I think our brother James first played their stuff for her. So here I am passing along this fun find to you. Karmin has light, fun and very danceable (is danceable a word? - no, bummer). For more from Karmin check out their website and youtube channel.
P.S. You can buy their song BrokenHearted on iTunes for only $0.69. Totally worth it!

I heart Michigan and the Winter Blues

I've started at least half a dozen posts this week, posts about resolutions and goals, posts about the good the bad and the ugly of 2011, posts about hope and about being down, all fine, all true and all posts that will never see the light of day. The last few weeks I've had a hard time putting my thoughts in words and as a result I haven't had much to say here, in the one part of my life that is all words. Winter is here and it has made a little down and like hibernating for the next 3 to 4 months. So my first goal of the year is going to be to do something that makes me happy every day in an attempt to fight off those winter blues. Today I'm thinking about how much I love Michigan and listening to this song over and over and over (now tell me that doesn't lift your spirits, just a little bit)!

P.S. isn't that print the cutest? I gifted one to my Brother and Sister In-Law for Christmas, along with this TX (my SIL home state) one.

Share - Meg and Dia

Did you watch The Voice earlier this summer? Around here we (my mom, my sister, my fake sister Kimmy and my soon to be sister in-law Kelsey) were big fans of the show and even more so of the (in my opinion) break out star Dia Frampton. So you can imagine how tickled I was to discover that she had a band with her sister Meg that had already put out a few albums, the most recent being the very cool Cocoon. You can stream the whole album on their website, which I did over and over after discovering it, and you can also buy it on iTunes and Amazon, I did because I want to be a supporter.

It was hard to pick a favorite song, but for today I think this one is my fave. Ask me again tomorrow it is sure to change!

Scala & Kolacny Brothers

I first heard the amazing Belgium girls choir Scala & Kolacny Brothers a few weeks ago on Morning Edition and loved them right away. They are known for their almost ethereal covers of rock and pop songs. Take a listen to this little playlist I put together (the last song is an original) and then go listen to every song you can get your hands (ears) on.

Sounds like 1995 around here

Last night I watched one of my all time favorite movies, Empire Records. And now I have the sounds of 1995 echoing through my mine. In 1995 I was in the 7th grade and spent far to much time hanging out in my bedroom listening to The Planet 96.3 the radio station that brought cool new alternative music to all us kids in the metro Detroit area. I think the only time in my life that music was more important to my every day life was college. To my 7th grade self knowing every word to every song and every song on every album was vital.

Here is a play list of my fave songs from the Empire Records sound tack, the ones sending me down memory lane. To this day if any of these songs come on the radio I will turn them up and sing along with a giddy little smile and remember what it was like to be in middle school just discovering how music would shape my life.
